When TAIT innovates, the industry follows
The Vaporex System – Gasoline Vapor Recovery and Control
During the early 1970’s, founder Dr. Kenneth E. Tait pioneered a number of engineering design developments leading to 26 patents in gasoline vapor recovery and control. These innovations helped reduce air pollution and were adopted worldwide in countries like Japan and Spain.
In Japan, Dr. Tait conducted lectures explaining his vapor recovery systems to various engineering groups. In Spain, he helped an engineering company develop national standards and designs for the distribution phases of manufactured petroleum products.
At that time, Dr. Tait owned Tait & Associates, which provided design services for most of the oil service stations built in California, Arizona and Nevada. He was also President of Vaporex, Inc., a California-based research and development company that designed devices for service stations and gasoline terminals to collect escaping gasoline vapors, then converting them to liquid and clean air. Dr. Tait’s vapor recovery system was the precursor to systems currently operating at thousands of fueling facilities today.
Dr. Tait’s innovative concept strongly influenced today’s oil industry standards and
regulations. His expertise in vapor emissions and hydrocarbons helped the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) develop their national standards for Air Quality Control that led to today’s EPA pollution reduction guidelines.
*Patent number 38930,040 for gasoline terminals was issued to Vaporex, Inc. in 1972. Although Dr. Tait was heavily involved in the design, the credit for the invention was given to Dr. Lloyd Hendrix in order to simplify the issuance of the new patent. Dresser Industries, Inc. eventually purchased all patent rights to the Vaporex, Inc. system.
UST & AST Repair Services with Testing
In 1986, Tait Environmental Services answered an industry need by adding underground storage tank (UST) and aboveground storage tank (AST) repair services to their testing services. Existing procedures at the time mandated that clients who failed certain tests had to shut down their dispenser or fueling station operations until repairs were made by an independent-party repair contractor.
At the completion of all repairs, the client would have to schedule another test to receive a passing grade to reopen the facility. By offering both testing and repair services under one roof, TAIT allowed clients to keep their operations running smoothly, since in many cases, a simple repair often kept a facility from shutting down in the first place.
In 2005, a handful of maintenance and construction companies began offering both testing and repair services, but still did not offer major repair or constructions services. TAIT continues to be the only company that offers turnkey projects without using subcontractors.

City of Santa Ana’s Hazardous Materials Area Plan (HazMAP)
TAIT created something that had never been done before; an area plan that would give responders rapid access to critical information during an incident. TAIT worked closely with the Santa Ana Fire Department (SAFD)to create an enhanced “electronic” version of an Area Plan called HazMAP.
This revolutionary navigable map shows all of the city’s fire hydrants, storm drains, schools, roads, hospitals and more. Users can simply “click” on a business and retrieve its site-specific business plan, which provides a chemical inventory, site maps and business contact information.
HazMAP also provides easy access to key technical reference documents, such as the Emergency Response Guidebook and the Area Plan. This speeds access to chemical-specific information and allows users to perform plume modeling.

California Underground Storage Tank Designated Operator Certification Training
Once again, Tait’s solution filled a vitally important need. New California environmental regulations for Underground Storage Tank (UST) training—instituted on January 1, 2005—required all underground storage operators to list a Designated Operator for their facility.
TAIT launched a comprehensive Certification Training Course for California UST Designated Operators combines high-impact visual aids, four decades of expertise, and a money-back promise of success. To date, over 3,000 have taken this training and passed the state-mandated exam.

Bubblex
Tait’s patented Bubblexsm system of soil and groundwater treatment uses a specially designed extraction pipe and wellhead assembly to strip hydrocarbons from groundwater with up to 99% efficiency. It simultaneously extracts vapor and water using high vacuum and a one-inch diameter pipe modified to air lift the extracted liquid.

Bubblexsm is a patented (U.S. Patent # 5,906,241) service mark of TAIT ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT, Inc. (TAIT) for bubbling extraction, a patent-pending method to extract volatile hydrocarbons (i.e. gasoline components), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene [BTEX], MTBE and chlorinated compounds from groundwater and soil.
