California Adopts Green Building Code

The State of California Building Standards Commission recently adopted the nation’s first statewide “green” building code. The new code requires a 15% reduction in building energy use and a 50% reduction in landscape water use, among other measures.

Currently, the code is optional for builders; however, it will become mandatory in the 2010 edition of the code. The code covers single-family homes and voluntary standards for health-care facilities and commercial buildings, including retail. The new standards can be viewed at the following site: www.bsc.ca.gov/prpsd_stds/approvedstandards07.htm
