Fry’s fuel centers for Kroger and Ralph’s

Project Scope
The scope of work for TAIT on this project was the entitlement, design and permitting of fuel center sites for Fry’s food stores within their existing supermarket parking lots at locations throughout Arizona. The project involved 12 ground-up sites, and 42 sites in the research and conceptual phase. Each fuel center had 3 to 7 fuel dispensers, a kiosk and a full canopy. The new fuel center addition enhanced the one-stop shopping experience for the customer. Work began in 2005 and was completed by 2008.

Project Challenges
The typical challenge in this case was to creatively lay out the site plan in existing parking lots while minimizing the impact on the number of existing parking spaces. TAIT needed to do this in a way that would avoid an extensive entitlement process or requests for parking variances.

TAIT Solutions
TAIT applied its problem-solving skills to the design challenges. At some of the sites, site specific parking analysis were utilized to evaluate applicable city parking standard allowances for mixed uses that have varying peak hour traffic. In those instances, TAIT skillfully redesigned the parking lots, applying the necessary allowances. This allowed the client to proceed with the design and permitting while avoiding an extensive entitlement process. This, along with a shortened planning approval time, expedited the schedule so that the facility could open sooner.
